Beginners 6 Week Training Program

Fellow MTBers, DORC are happy to offer an introductory training program targeting those who are new to the sport of Mountain Biking. This program will run over 6 weeks and is open to a maximum of 6 riders aged 18 yrs and over. Geoff Fox, one of our qualified Level 1 MTBA Coaches has volunteered his time to run this event.

This event is being run at nil cost to club members, however we anticipate that future courses will incur a fee.

Once register DORC will notify the 6 successful MTBers Friday afternoon/evening 15 Jan.

You are registering for a Beginners 6 week training program that will be held each Saturday Morning (exact time TBA) at different locations around Darwin, beginning 16 Jan and finishing on the 20 Jan. At present this course is free of charge as the club and our coaches develop our skills and experience delivering these courses. Once the club is happy with the product we are providing it is anticipated that a fee will be applied to these programs.

This Program is open to club members 18yrs of age and over and will cover the following topics/skills.

​Week 1, 16 Jan. Basic Maintenance, Bike set up, Moving on your bike, Easy ride through the old pine forrest. 

Week 2, 23 Jan. Revise week 1, Pedalling, shifting, braking and cornering, easy ride through the new pine forrest. 

Week 3, 30 Jan. Revise week 2, Wheelies, Hopping and negotiating obstacles, easy ride through Charles Darwin National Park.

Week 4, 6 Feb. Revise week 3. Pumping, Climbing and Switchbacks. Easy ride through Charles Darwin National Park. 

Week 5, 13 Feb. Revise week 4. Drops, Jumps, Stairs and urban obstacles. Urban ride through Darwin City. 

Week 6, 20 Feb. Culmination of all skills incorporated in a ride at the Hanging rock and etch-a-sketch loops at Humpty Doo. 

All participants must be a DORC/MTBA member to participate. 

Basic requirements will be as follows:

a. Mountain Bike in a safe working condition, 

b. safety gear including Helmet, gloves, shoes and eye protection, 

c. each rider will need to carry a spare tube, puncture repair kit, multi/bike tool, pump, and; 

d. minimum of 2 litres of drinking water.

    Hi there, I have a hybrid road bike. I would like to try out off-road riding, as I enjoy riding off-road. Is my bike suitable to use in this course? I hope to buy a new one this year, but am undecided what I want to get. I would like to join the training. It looks great!

Due to rain and muddy conditions, the Spitfire Trail in Charles Darwin National Park is closed for the wet season. Please help us protect our trails and do not ride until it is reopened.
